How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Dock

A boat dock is a big investment, and it’s natural that you won’t want to replace yours anytime soon. Fortunately, when a boat dock receives the proper care it can last anywhere from 20 to 30 years.

Here are the steps you’ll need to take to ensure that your dock lasts as long as possible.

Materials and Installation

The longevity of your dock depends on the materials used to construct it, as well as the skill of the installation team.

Of course, our team here at Dream Boat Docks is committed to using the highest quality materials on the market, and our skilled carpenters bring a superior attention to detail and care to the process.

Clean Your Dock

Your dock should receive a thorough cleaning at least once a year. Use the steps below.

  1. Remove all debris.
  2. Apply a gentle cleaning solution that won’t harm local marine life, such as vinegar and water or baking soda and water.
  3. Scrub stains, mildew, and grime away with a non-abrasive brush.
  4. Pressure wash the dock at moderate pressure.

Pressure washing can be tricky. To avoid damage, start with the lowest setting and work your way up. Never use the highest possible setting.

Give Your Docks Check-Ups

Docks should receive an annual check-up to ensure that it’s in good shape. Here is your check-up checklist.

  1. Are the fasteners stable?
  2. Is all of the hardware stable and in good shape?
  3. Are there any wooden boards that are splintered, cracked, or rotted?
  4. Ensure all bolts are tight.
  5. Ensure stairs and ladders are stable.
  6. Make sure nothing is missing or damaged.

If you find any issues with your dock, take the time to get them repaired right away. Dock problems tend to get worse over time, not better, and problems don’t go away on their own.

Install Accessories

Boats can damage docks, but certain protective accessories can help. Consider installing rub rails, bumpers, and boat fenders to ensure the boat never makes contact with the wooden sections of your dock.

As custom dock makers, we can install these accessories for you during the design process. All you have to do is let us know that you’re interested in them!
