Boat Lift Troubleshooting: 4 Common Problems and How to Solve Them

Table of Contents

Here at Dream Boat Docks we recommend boat lifts to nearly all of our customers. Our boat lifts are engineered for maximum stability and durability, and thus protect your boat and make boat use super convenient.

Nevertheless, it is a mechanical item with mechanical parts, and that means every now and then even our awesome boat lifts need a little nudge to start working properly.

Once you’ve ensured you aren’t overloading the boat lift with a boat it wasn’t designed for, there are four common problems that you can usually troubleshoot yourself. Here’s what you need to know.

#1) Motor Won't Work

The most common reason for a motor malfunction is a problem with the power supply. Check the circuit breaker and the outlet.

If neither of those solves the problem, you might need an electrician to verify that power is flowing to properly to the boat lift, or a technician to check the wiring.

#2) Improper Lift Movement

The first thing you should do is check your boat lift cables for wear and tear. You want to check for signs of rust, which can cause them to break and can damage your boat.

Assuming they’re not rusted, you can lubricate them with a little motor oil to get them moving again. If they are, you’ll need to get them repaired.

#3) Lift is Noisy

A noisy lift is a lift in need of gear lubrication. All gears and pulleys need marine-grade lithium grease, also known as boat lift grease. CRC Marine, Sta-Lube, and other similar brands will all work just fine.

A noisy lift is often the first sign that the lift is in need of a little TLC. Do this task as soon as you hear sounds you don’t like.

#4) Lift is Sinking

Sadly, a sinking lift is almost always the product of a poor installation. We don’t get calls about sinking lifts, because we take the time to assess soil conditions and other issues before we start building pilings, docks, and boat lifts. If your lift is sinking, it isn’t one of ours.

As experienced boat dock contractors, we can help you build a boat lift that won’t sink.
