Table of Contents

Warmer weather is finally here, which means it’s almost time to get your boat out on the water!

As Houston’s premier builder of custom docks and piers, we’re as excited as you are. That’s why we wanted to offer a comprehensive spring cleaning checklist that ensures your dock is ready for a great (and a safe) boating season!

Here’s everything you’ll need to do to start the season off right.

Inspect Your Dock

Take a moment to look for the following flaws.

  1. Loose boards
  2. Cracked boards
  3. Rusted fasteners
  4. Cracked pilings or supports
  5. Signs of shifting, instability, or damage
  6. Loose or corroded bolts, screws, or other hardware.

If you see any problems, contact us to get help with repairs.

Inspect Your Lift

Your boat lift is vital to keeping your boat seaworthy, so take a moment to inspect the lift as well.

  1. Check cables, pulleys, and motor for signs of damage.
  2. Lubricate moving parts and test them to make sure they work properly.
  3. Check the boat lift for signs of corrosion or damage. If you have an aluminum lift, look for signs of pitting and corrosion.

We repair boat lifts too, so don’t hesitate to call us if there is a problem.

Clean Your Dock

Nobody escapes spring cleaning! Your deck, dock, or boathouse won’t be fun to use if it’s filthy.

  1. Sweep the fall and winter debris off your dock.
  2. Wash your dock with mild dish soap and water.
  3. If you’re seeing a lot of algae and mold, you can pressure wash your dock, but you should keep the psi low (600 psi for softwoods, up to 1200 psi for hardwoods).
  4. Remove any seat cushions that have mildewed over the winter season, and replace them. If they have green spots on them or smell funny, they’ve got to go—nobody will want to sit on them.

Whatever you do, use soft brushes and avoid harsh chemicals. Otherwise, you could discolor the wooden elements of your dock, or damage them.

Check Safety Features

It’s hard to have a great boating season if someone ends up in the ER (or worse). With your dock structurally sound and clean, it’s time to turn our attention to safety features.

  1. Check floats and buoys for leaks, damage, or wear.
  2. Replace damaged or worn out floats and buoys.
  3. Ensure all dock lighting, including navigation lights and pathway illumination, are functioning correctly. Replace any worn bulbs or damaged fixtures.
  4. Make sure handrails and ladders are secure.
  5. Check your storage to make sure all of your safety and first aid equipment is up to date and fully functional.
