How to Properly Maintain Your Dream Boat Dock

A modern dock can be so much more than a place to tie up your boat. It can be a place to picnic, to chill with a beer in hand, to dive into the water, or to watch the kids splash around under your watchful eye.

If you’ve invested in the dock of your dreams, proper maintenance is absolutely vital, especially if you have a wooden dock rather than a composite lumber dock. Composite lumber docks usually do okay with a quick wash once a month or so, but wooden docks need considerably more TLC.

If you’re one of the many Houston homeowners who continues to favor a wooden dock over a composite one, then these tips are for you.

Control Mold and Mildew

Your dock is constantly exposed to moisture. Thanks to the Houston-area climate, it’s constantly exposed to heat as well. It can easily become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

When that happens, your dock becomes a slippery, dangerous, unpleasant eyesore.

So keep it fresh! Pressure wash it once a month on a low setting and then gently sand down the deck to remove any splinters. You should stain your dock with an oil-based stain on an annual basis.

Keep an Eye Out for Rust

Metal fasteners are prone to rust, and it’s important to get rid of it as quickly as you can. You can usually rub them away with vinegar or dish soap as long as you don’t let the rust problem grow.

Inspect, Inspect, Inspect

You should watch for warping and bending wood. Those boards should be replaced as quickly as possible. If you find problems you can’t fix on your own, don’t hesitate to call in a repair expert.
