When is it Time to Replace Your Dock?

Table of Contents

Even the best boat dock will eventually need replacement, even if you’re vigilant about repair and maintenance.

Nobody wants to spend the money too early! That’s why we put together these signs that the dock has got to go. Here’s what you need to look for.

#1) Wood Rot

Wood rot, warping, and cracks are all signs that the dock is on its last legs.

You should pay special attention to the wood pilings that support the dock.

One or two boards can be replaced. Multiple boards or pilings signal the end of the dock’s lifespan, and indicate the dock might not be safe to walk on.

#2) Rust

Are you seeing a great deal of rust on your dock hardware? While you can handle small problem areas, widespread rusting on screws, bolts, and brackets indicate that the dock is weakening.

#3) Excessive Creaking

Most docks creak a little, but if it groans and squeals every time you take a step there is probably a deep problem with the dock. Stop putting weight on it and get it checked out.

Chances are, the dock has become unstable enough to require a replacement.

#4) Fastener Issues

Sometimes old docks have trouble holding onto their fasteners and screws. You can try to replace them, but sometimes the structure has sustained too much damage to repair.

#5) Age

Most docks last about 30 years before they need replacing, depending on how well they’re maintained and what materials were used to construct the dock in the first place. If your dock is having a lot of issues and it’s already over 30, it’s probably better to replace the dock than to continue repairing it.

If your dock is older and it’s still fine, of course, then you can leave it a little while longer. You don’t have to run out and replace the dock just because it’s older! Nevertheless, you’ll want to start keeping an eye on it as the dock ages, and use your best judgement if issues continue to pile up.
